One Man's Dream
Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Mr. Jim Tobin, Chair of the Sydney Mines Heritage Society, had a dream to create a heritage museum that would represent the culture of the coal mining industry and the community of Sydney Mines for future generations to come. He also had a vision to create a fossil centre which would house a selection of the Carboniferous plant fossils found in the area that were closely associated with the coal mining industry. After many hours of trying to obtain  funding, supervising the renovation and construction of buildings, and much physical labor, one man's dream became a reality for many people to enjoy for generations to come. On August 28, 1999, the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum opened in the historic Sydney Mines Railroad Station. Two years later, the Sydney Mines Heritage Society opened the first fossil centre in a small building next to the station on July 1, 2001. Finally, on July 1, 2004, the Cape Breton Fossil Centre opened its doors to the public in a new facility adjacent to the railway station. Mr. Jim Tobin, who began with a dream, is the true founder of the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum and the Cape Breton Fossil Centre.
